What to Bring

Here are some things you should be sure to bring with you.

To Wear:

  • Plan to dress in layers. The weather in South Lake Tahoe in October can be unpredictable, and depending on where you are coming from, the temperature may not be what you expect. It could rain, shine and be in the 80s, or a mix of both.
  • Bring comfortable clothes to write and lounge in
  • Bring your swimwear if you want to get in the hot tub. We don't want to get to know each other that well (at least not all of us)
  • Bring comfortable footwear you can hike and walk in. Shoes are not allowed in the home, but if you have house shoes or slippers you only wear in side, those are both allowed and encouraged. Bring comfortable socks, and ones with grippy soles if possible.

To Write:

  • Bring your tablet, your computer, pen and paper or whatever you want to write on.
  • Bring your charging cords. We will have power, and will try to have it where you need it.
  • Bring a lap desk if you need one. We will have some lap desks and rolling mini desks you can use, but if you need something specific, bring it with you.
  • A good mindset. We know sometimes you can experience negative feelings about your writing. We all do. But we want this to be a positive space where everyone feels welcome. Come ready to write, learn, and spend time creating with other writers.

For You:

  • Bring shower needs like body soap, shampoo, or whatever else you need. We don't have those things on hand for you.
  • Bring deodorant, toothpaste, and other personal hygiene needs. Everyone will thank you.
  • Plenty of clothes. Extra changes of clothes can always come in handy, and while there is shopping "in town" we don't plan to go there more than once, and getting there may be a challenge. That said, we will try to help if you genuinely need it.
  • Anything you need to make yourself comfortable. Favorite pillow? Lap blanket? Robe? Bring it along!

What Not to Bring

  • We don't want to be a downer or harsh your groove, but there are certain things you should not bring to Fjeldheim. Here is a list of those things"
  • Your pets. We love your dogs (Troy especially loves all of them). We can't let you bring them to the retreat though. Sorry about that.
  • Your children or your spouse. (unless you luck into a double occupancy room). We love your kids, too, but this is the place to get away from them. Your spouse may come, but accommodations are more "dorm" and family style with separate areas for men and women. Even if your spouse is not an author, but just wants to come to Tahoe, they still will have to pay regular ticket prices, so be sure they really want to come before booking a place for them.*
  • Illegal drugs or other illegal substances: This is not one of "those" retreats where you can do whatever you want. If it's illegal, we can't have it in or around the venue.
  • Guns, Fireworks, and Explosive Devices: Sorry, not sorry. We don't care if you have a 48 state concealed carry permit and are the safest person in the world. We can't allow guns here for the safety of everyone involved, and explosive items are just a bad idea in general.
